the drop-in protobuf schema registry for buf cli

  • use your existing buf cli workflows
  • version, distribute, and consume protocol buffers (protobuf) schemas
  • manage grpc, connect, and twirp projects
  • flat pricing with unlimited private modules
  • no pay per type
  • no per-type limits
  • no growing bills

## usage

consume

1. add dependencies in `buf.yaml`:
```yaml
version: v2
deps:
- protos.rip/googleapis/googleapis
- protos.rip/bufbuild/protovalidate
```
2. resolve lockfile and generate code:
```bash
buf dep update
buf generate
```

publish

1. point `buf.yaml` at your protos.rip module:
```yaml
version: v2
modules:
- path: proto
name: protos.rip/scope/module
```
2. sign in, create the module, and push:
```bash
buf registry login protos.rip # or in ci: echo $PROTORIP_TOKEN | buf registry login protos.rip --token-stdin
buf registry module create protos.rip/scope/module
buf push
```

migrate

1. replace `buf.build` module names in `buf.yaml`:
```yaml
version: v2
modules:
- path: proto
name: protos.rip/scope/module
deps:
- protos.rip/googleapis/googleapis
```
2. refresh `buf.lock` and push:
```bash
buf registry module create protos.rip/scope/module
buf dep update
buf push
```

note: transitive dependencies must also be migrated to protos.rip first.

## frequently asked questions

### is Protorip compatible with the Buf Schema Registry (BSR)?

Protorip is an alternative Protobuf registry that implements the open source BSR API, so you can use it with the buf CLI you already have. It supports common registry workflows, though not every buf.build BSR feature. See [compatibility](/compatibility) for details.

### how do I migrate from buf.build?

Replace `buf.build` with `protos.rip` in your `buf.yaml`, then run `buf dep update` and `buf push`. For common upstream dependencies like `googleapis`, `protovalidate`, and `grpc-gateway`, we maintain the same set of [curated mirrors](/registry) on `protos.rip`.

### what buf CLI features are supported?

Protorip works directly with the official `buf` CLI (`>= v1.32.0`) for publishing (`buf push`), dependency management (`buf dep update`, `buf build`), and module and label administration. We do not host [generated SDK package registries](https://buf.build/docs/bsr/generated-sdks/) (npm, Go, or Maven) or webhooks. See [compatibility](/compatibility) for the full list.
